iMac Pro 27 inch (MQ2Y2) - Powerhouse Performance for Pros
Like the iMac desktop line, the iMac Pro is an All-In-One computer, but it blends the traditional iMac design with the raw power of the Mac Pro. It can be considered the most powerful All-In-One on the market today. Apple introduced this product line at WWDC17 and released it in late 2017 to serve professionals who handle high-end graphics work.
From a technical standpoint, creating the iMac Pro is an outstanding achievement, because Apple packed an extremely powerful configuration into a slim, lightweight machine with low power consumption, and more.
Design
Since their debut, iMac products have impressed users with their "all-in-one" design language. It saves space while still delivering the strong performance that work demands. With its compact design, the whole machine looks like an ordinary TV screen, with all of the hardware tucked neatly into the back of the display.
The stand is another strong point of the iMac Pro. The metal frame has a minimalist design that is still very elegant and sturdy.
Display
The display on the iMac Pro is no different from the 5K display on the traditional iMac. It is still a 5K panel made by LG, covering 91% of the Adobe RGB color gamut and supporting the DCI-P3 color gamut. The iMac Pro's display is not quite as outstanding as the dedicated monitors made for designers.
However, you don't need to worry too much, because the iMac Pro makes it easier to add external displays when your work demands the most accurate colors, such as printing and professional graphics.
At the same time, iMac Pro can output to 2 additional 5K@60Hz displays (5.120 x 2.880) or 4 additional 4K@60Hz displays (3.840 x 2.160); or 4 4K@60Hz displays (4.096 x 2.304) through its 4 USB-C ports (also known as Thunderbolt 3.0 ports).
Processor
CPU
The iMac Pro uses W-series CPUs built on a 64-bit architecture, customized by Intel to Apple's requirements. In practice, these CPUs run at lower clock speeds than the original W-series CPUs, but they are more power efficient. Specifically:
- The 8-core W-2140B chip, 3.2GHz/4.2GHz, with 8MB/11MB of L2/L3 cache (the original Intel W-2145 runs at 3.7GHz/4.5GHz).
- The 10-core W-2150B chip, 3.0GHz/4.5GHz, with 10MB/13.75MB of L2/L3 cache (the original Intel W-2155 runs at 3.5GHz/4.5GHz).
- The 14-core W-2170B chip, 2.5GHz/4.3GHz, with 14.25MB/19MB of L2/L3 cache (the original Intel W-2155 runs at 2.5GHz/4.3GHz).
- The 18-core W-2190B chip, 2.3GHz/4.3GHz, with 18MB/24.75MB of L2/L3 cache (the original Intel W-2195 runs at 2.3GHz/4.3GHz).
RAM
Inside the iMac Pro are 4 RAM slots. The RAM used in the iMac Pro is ECC RAM with a 2600MHz bus, designed for servers and capable of correcting errors on its own.
RAM is configurable at 32GB, 64GB, or up to 128GB (4x32GB). Upgrading RAM and SSD in the iMac Pro is somewhat complicated, much like on traditional iMac models.
Normally, you have to upgrade RAM and SSD at the factory (when ordering online) or have an Apple authorized service center do it for you. If you upgrade it yourself elsewhere, you will lose your Apple Care warranty, because the upgrade requires separating the display.
GPU
For a long time, the AMD graphics chips in iMac models were never a worthy rival to graphics chips from nVdia. Fortunately, the Pro Vega 56 and Pro Vega 64 chips were introduced to thoroughly fix the weaknesses of AMD graphics cards. The Radeon Pro Vega 56 and Pro Vega Pro 64 are equipped with very powerful graphics chips that can compete with the GTX 1070 and GTX 1080.
In practice, Radeon Pro Vega chips deliver 15-20% lower gaming performance than the Radeon RX Vega chip; but they offer better-optimized performance for professional workloads than the RX line, along with lower power consumption than the Radeon RX Vega line. Not to mention that the Pro Vega 64 uses 16GB of HBM2 memory, an extremely expensive type of graphics memory that costs far more than GDDR5x. This memory is usually only put to full use when you edit 3D video or work in VR.
Storage
Apple still uses very fast NVMe SSDs, designed specifically for its Mac products. Inside the iMac Pro there are usually 2 separate SSDs, but when working in MacOS you see only 1 drive, because Apple has its own controller that coordinates reading and writing data across these 2 SSDs. Combining the 2 drives boosts the storage speed in the iMac Pro to an astonishing figure. In tests on a number of well-known websites, the read/write speed on the iMac Pro reaches approximately 3500/2700MBps, a number that amazed the tech community.
In addition, Apple has integrated a new-generation T2 chip into the iMac Pro to support data encryption when storing data on the iMac Pro, without any drop in drive read/write performance.
Ports
As always, iMac Pro is equipped with 4 USB-C ports (the 2017 iMac has only 2 USB-C ports). The ports on this machine include:
- Webcam: 1080p FaceTime.
- 4 x Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C): can output to 2 additional 5K@60Hz displays (5.120 x 2.880); or 4 4K@60Hz displays (3.840 x 2.160) or 4 4K@60Hz displays (4.096 x 2.304)
- 4 x USB 3.0
- 3.5mm port, memory card slot, 10Gbps Ethernet, Wi-Fi ac, BT 4.2
Immersive Sound
The advanced stereo speakers in the iMac Pro 27 inch deliver a wide frequency response with rich bass and impressive volume. With 4 beamforming microphones, your voice is heard louder and clearer than any background noise.
Cooling and Noise
With the iMac Pro, Apple redesigned the internal architecture compared with the earlier traditional iMac. Specifically, the mainboard has been flipped around, with 2 larger fans, the HDD removed altogether, and the external RAM slots "retired," while the air intake and exhaust vents are also larger.
According to reputable overseas review sites, the temperatures and noise produced by the iMac are very well optimized, with nothing to complain about for a machine with specs this extreme.
Accessories:
In the box you will find:
- Magic Mouse 2 in space gray.
- Magic Keyboard 2 full-size (with numeric keypad) in space gray.
- A gray Lightning cable for charging the keyboard/mouse/trackpad.
- 1 power cord.
When ordering online, you can also choose a gray Magic Tracpad 2.
