DELL G15 5525 (AMD) (2022)

If you love the spaceship styling of Alienware but don't have a big budget, products like the Dell G15 5525 are well worth a look.

If you like the styling of Alienware but are short on budget, the DELL G15 5525 is well worth choosing. With solid build quality and powerful specs, it delivers a gaming experience worth noting in the budget to mid-range tier, depending on the configuration you pick.

Design - An Alienware “spaceship,” but more understated

It's fair to call the DELL G15 5525 a toned-down version of Alienware. With no honeycomb rear vents, no bright LED at the back and no alien-head logo, the Dell G15 5525 suits a wide range of settings, especially with color options like Gray, Camo Green and Black.

Build quality is decent, good enough that you can carry it anywhere with confidence. Although the chassis of the DELL G15 5525 still shows some flex and picks up fingerprints, neither affects the experience much.

Details like the logo, the cut lines and the heat vents are all carefully made. Most notable is the lightly textured paint finish, which feels comfortable to the touch.

The hinge of the DELL G15 5525 opens and closes smoothly, with little wobble during use. However, opening it with one hand can sometimes be a bit tricky.

The main drawback of the DELL G15 5525 is probably its weight of up to 2.5kg, which noticeably affects its portability.

Ports - Fairly plentiful

For connectivity, the DELL G15 5525 offers 3 USB-A 3.1 Gen 1 ports, 1 USB-C port with DisplayPort output (versions with an RTX 3060 or better also support Thunderbolt 4), 1 HDMI 2.1 port, an RJ45 LAN port and a 3.5mm combo headphone jack. That is a comfortable number of ports for connecting your devices.

Display - Smooth for gaming, average color

The DELL G15 5525 version that Hung Phat Laptop sells has a WVA panel with a 1920 x 1080 resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate and 250 nits of brightness, all typical for a budget gaming product. Higher-end versions raise the refresh rate to 165Hz, while maximum brightness goes up to 300 nits.

Overall, this display handles a wide range of games well, and the smoothness is especially clear in FPS titles like CS:GO, VALORANT and the like. The thin bezels on three sides give a roomy feel and keep the look clean.

For work, the display is best kept to web browsing, document editing and the like. It covers only 64% of sRGB and has a color error of nearly 2.0, which isn't really good enough for tasks that demand accuracy, such as graphics and design.

Above the display sits an HD webcam. Its quality is just enough for online classes and calls.

Keyboard and touchpad - Comfortable to use

The keyboard of the DELL G15 5525 is a full-size design that extends out to both sides. The key layout is easy to get used to, and the key travel is fairly deep. Taken together, typing is quite comfortable for both data entry and gaming. It's a small shame that the keyboard offers few colors: the base model has only a single-color Red LED.

The touchpad is medium-sized, and the glide is average with its plastic coating. After all, this is a budget gaming product, so you shouldn't expect too much.

DELL G15 5525 performance - Powerful new-generation hardware

The performance of the DELL G15 5525 comes from a Red-team AMD processor and a Green-team NVIDIA graphics card. The version Hung Phat Laptop sells uses an AMD Ryzen 7 6800H processor with 8 cores and 16 threads, 16GB of DDR5-4800MHz RAM, a 512GB NVMe SSD and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti 4GB discrete graphics card, which is the entry level of the machine's configuration range.

In Esports titles like League of Legends, Dota 2 or FIFA Online 4, the DELL G15 5525 performs extremely well at the highest settings. In AAA games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Spider-Man: Remastered, users can get a solid experience at Medium to High settings with the RTX 3050 Ti graphics card at 80W TGP (+15W with Dynamic Boost 2.0).

If you want to use Ray Tracing, you should also turn on NVIDIA DLSS to keep FPS up. Plenty of AAA games today already offer these options, so even if you buy the lowest configuration, you can rest easy that it will play games well for the next 2-3 years.

For multimedia applications, the current configuration of the Dell G15 5525 also serves well. From the Ryzen 7 6800H chip with the new Zen 3+ architecture, to the RTX 3050 Ti graphics card and upgradable RAM, the machine has everything it needs to deliver a positive experience.

Upgradability and battery life - Adequate

For upgrades, the DELL G15 5525 has 2 RAM slots and 1 NVMe SSD slot. It currently comes with 16GB of single-channel RAM and a 512GB SSD, so you can add another RAM stick for dual-channel and increase the storage capacity.

With its 86Wh battery, the machine delivers 2.5 - 3h of use with office tasks at 50% brightness. Since this is a gaming product, that figure is understandable.
