Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8
A premium Ultrabook with strong battery life and stable performance, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 is an excellent fit for business users who often work long hours. Better yet, with its lightweight build and practical 14-inch display, it is an ideal laptop for anyone who is frequently on the move and working outside the office.
Design - Thin, light, and exceptionally durable
At first glance, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 looks similar to the X1 Carbon Gen 7, but Lenovo always knows how to create meaningful differences within a familiar design language. On this year's version, Lenovo has subtly moved the “X1” mark next to the ThinkPad logo on the right side of the lid. The American laptop maker also no longer uses the familiar matte coating on the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8, replacing it with a smooth carbon fiber finish. This is one of the key design details that sets this year's model apart.
While the exterior has changed, the interior layout remains the same as the X1 Carbon Gen 7. The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 still uses the same flexible yet sturdy dual-hinge system as previous generations. Beside it is the auxiliary speaker strip, which helps deliver a more immersive audio experience for users. The display bezels have always been a highlight of the X1 Carbon series, and they remain elegantly slim.
A carefully refined display
Like its predecessor, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 comes with a Full HD display on the base configuration. What stands out is that Lenovo has given this display a modest upgrade by increasing brightness to 400 nits. This is a meaningful improvement for anyone who often works outdoors. Color coverage is solid, with 95% sRGB and 61% AdobeRGB. That level of coverage is fair to call sufficient for photo editing and everyday work. The Full HD resolution also comes with two additional display options: a lower-power version and a version that supports privacy protection against visual hacking.
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 also offers 2K and 4K HDR display options with Dolby Vision technology, similar to the Gen 7 version, delivering a better experience with more accurate colors. For business users who travel frequently, however, a Full HD display with optimized power efficiency is likely more than enough.
Keyboard and touchpad - A top-tier laptop experience
The keyboard on the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 is designed much like the previous version. Key travel is shallower at just 1.5mm, but it does not compromise the typing experience. And like other 2020 ThinkPad models, Lenovo equips this X1 Carbon Gen 8 with dedicated function keys for calls. If you have been using laptops for years, you have almost certainly heard about the typing feel of this keyboard. Deep key travel, paired with the distinctive tactile rebound that only ThinkPad offers, makes the keyboard experience on ThinkPad laptops in general, and the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 in particular, the best available on a laptop to date.
The touchpad is moderately sized, with a smooth glass surface that feels fluid and effortless under your fingers while resisting sweat and smudges. As always, the ThinkPad touchpad is equipped with Windows Precision Driver, providing accurate, responsive control across every gesture. The left and right mouse buttons offer good feedback.
The TrackPoint still delivers precise, comfortable navigation. The improvement over the Gen 7 lies in the physical button system. On the Gen 8 version, these buttons have been raised slightly higher, creating a firmer, more accurate click feel.
Stable performance
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 uses 10th Gen Comet Lake CPUs, with options ranging from Core i5 10210U to Core i7 10610U. With this CPU series, the X1 Carbon Gen 8 promises to be an Ultrabook with stronger performance than many competitors. In Cinebench R20, this machine delivers highly impressive results, with both the i5 and i7 options scoring above 1000. With that result, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 can smoothly edit 4K videos or run demanding emulation tasks.
The laptop has two RAM options, 8GB and 16GB, though for office work, 8GB is likely more than enough. Lenovo has not announced a specific plan to introduce an i7 10810U option with 6 cores and 12 threads, but the company will likely release this configuration soon.
Ports and battery life
As a premium business laptop, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 still gives you a complete port selection. The machine includes 2 USB Type A 3.2 Gen 1 ports on both sides, 2 USB Type C ports with Thunderbolt 3, 1 HDMI 1.4b port, and 1 3.5mm headphone jack. It is genuinely impressive that such a thin and light laptop still offers such a full set of connectivity options.
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 still uses the same 51Wh battery as the Gen 7 version. However, battery life has been significantly improved on this version. Instead of lasting only 8 hours like the previous generation, the X1 Carbon Gen 8 delivers up to 12 hours of use, giving users the freedom to work comfortably for long stretches.
Audio system and security
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 is still equipped with 4 speakers, including 2 main 2W speakers on the bottom of the machine and 2 auxiliary 0.8W speakers on both sides of the hinge. The sound is stereo, realistic, and clear, while Dolby Atmos Premium technology helps create an immersive, balanced audio experience with 7.1 simulation.
The machine is equipped with a one-touch fingerprint sensor and 3-layer fingerprint security. The embedded dTPM 2.0 chip allows users to set passwords for the BIOS, hard drive, and startup process. The laptop also retains the ThinkShutter slider to help prevent unauthorized access through the camera. In addition, users can choose Windows Hello facial unlock or an anti-peeping display panel with PrivacyGuard technology, helping maximize security.
Is the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 the right choice?
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 does not have an aluminum chassis with sharp CNC-cut lines like the DELL XPS 13 9300 (2020). Clearly, this machine is not aimed at users who prioritize visual beauty above all else. However, for those who need a durable Ultrabook built to stand the test of time, paired with masculine lines that project the presence of a true business professional, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 is an outstanding choice. Add in absolutely stable long-term performance, and the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 is undoubtedly a laptop worth your attention in the premium Ultrabook segment!
