Verbatim has just introduced the SWOVA128G external SSD, which works much like the CD-R discs of old: you can write to it, but you can never erase or modify what's on it.
The SWOVA128G is a storage option for important, permanent data that has to stay safe from accidental deletion or modification.
Long ago, anyone around 40 or older has probably seen the Verbatim brand on CD discs. Back then, people used CD-R (Compact Disc-Recordable) discs to record data. Once finished, these discs became CD-ROMs (Compact Disc-Read Only Memory), which could only be read and never written to again. Later came the CD-RW (Compact Disc-ReWritable), which could be written and erased at least 1000 times. CD-R grew out of the WORM (Write Once Read Many) storage model, meaning you write once and read as many times as you like. With today's technology, CD-R is obsolete, and Verbatim is bringing the SWOVA128G to a market that still needs what this type of optical disc offered.
The Verbatim SWOVA128G has a 128 GB capacity and a 10-year warranty. It is a NAND Flash-based storage device that connects over USB 3.2 Gen 1. This portable SSD uses MLC memory chips that have been tested against selected standards and can operate normally in temperatures from -35 to 50 degrees C. The SWOVA128G's erase protection is controlled through communication with software, which currently runs only on Windows 10 and 11 (.NET 4.8 required). If you plug the SWOVA128G into a computer that doesn't have Verbatim's own software installed, the drive stays in read-only mode, and you can only add more data (if there is free space left) through that software. Of course, once the pen is put to paper, there's no taking it back: anything already written can't be erased or renamed, just like writing multisession CD-R discs back in the day. In return, if you store important data here, the SWOVA128G can take on every kind of ransomware out there.
The SWOVA128G comes preformatted as exFAT, and if you only need to read the data on the drive, you can use any device running macOS, ChromeOS, iOS, Android, or Windows (with exFAT support). The product doesn't have a price yet, and I don't know yet what application is used to write data to this drive. Does anyone have any thoughts?
