DELL XPS 17 9700 (2020)

The Dell XPS 9700 is a versatile laptop that suits many different uses and many different kinds of users. Whether you are a graphic designer who needs a large, high-quality display that meets color standards, or a business professional who wants a durable laptop that delivers strong work performance while also handling entertainment and gaming, the Dell XPS 9700 can be a sensible choice.

If the 15.6-inch display and ultra-thin bezels of the XPS 9500 don't quite meet your display needs, consider upgrading to the XPS 9700. With a 17-inch screen that is still suitably thin and light, the Dell XPS 17 9700 is a good fit for people who want a large display for multitasking, and for anyone in design who needs a wide screen to see more at once.

A 17-inch thin-bezel display with advanced quality

The most outstanding feature of the XPS 9700 is its sharp 17-inch InfinityEdge display, with resolution options of up to 4K touch. It is one of the laptops with the highest screen-to-body ratio, with bezels only 5mm thick to maximize the viewing area. The Dell XPS 9700 uses a WVA (Wide View Angle) panel combined with Dolby Vision imaging technology, delivering sharper and more vivid images than ordinary displays.

The display on the Dell XPS 9700 can match the MacBook Pro 16 and even edges out its rival in a few respects. Color coverage on this laptop is excellent, at 90.4% AdobeRGB and 121.6% DCI-P3, beating two competitors in the same segment: the MacBook Pro 16 (80.7%) and the Gigabyte Aero 17 (115.1%). The Dell XPS 9700 can easily meet the demanding color needs of designers. Screen brightness is also very high, reaching 505 nits, so working outdoors or under strong light is no challenge for the XPS 9700.

Powerful performance for a wide range of needs

Dell equips the XPS 9700 "powerhouse" with a high-performance 10th-generation i7 processor, with 6 cores, 12 threads and a maximum boost speed of up to 5GHz. With this power, users no longer need to worry about stuttering or slowdowns during multitasking, and switching between applications runs smoothly on this laptop. For creative professionals, the XPS 9700 also handles fast video editing and exporting very well, as its speed is quite impressive: it takes less than 9 minutes to convert a 4K video to 1080p.

The Dell XPS 17 9700 not only meets users' graphics needs but also delivers very good entertainment capability, with graphics options of up to NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060, similar to some other gaming-focused laptops such as the Razer Blade 17 (part of the Razer Blade 15-18 line) and the MSI GF75. Although it is designed with designers in mind, the XPS 9700 can still handle AAA games at medium to high settings, with stable FPS that matches other gaming laptops.

A thin, light design: 17 inches without the bulk

XPS has long been Dell's premium business laptop line, with an elegant, refined design, and the 9700 is no exception. Dell combines many materials in the XPS 9700, with premium CNC aluminum on the lid and bottom panel, and carbon fiber on the keyboard deck and palm rest. The Dell XPS 17 9700 is fairly compact and lighter than most other 17-inch laptops such as the Gigabyte Aero 17 HDR or HP Envy 17, weighing only 2.13 kg and measuring 19.5mm thick. If you travel often and prefer a lighter machine, the LG Gram 17 may suit you better, but that comes as a trade-off against the "monster" performance the XPS 9700 offers.

Dell decided to follow in the MacBook Pro's footsteps by removing all other ports and equipping the Dell XPS 17 9700 with only four USB-C Thunderbolt 3 ports. This is understandable, as Dell wanted to keep this 17-inch laptop thin. The number and placement of ports will be a little inconvenient, since users must carry an adapter if they want to use peripherals. In return, the SD card slot on the XPS 9700 has a very high transfer speed, so users may need only a few seconds to move photos from a memory card to the computer.

A quality keyboard and a large trackpad

Dell uses the same keyboard design on the XPS 9500 and 9700. Key travel on this laptop is slightly shallower than on the HP Spectre and Dell Latitude, but typing still feels very comfortable and bouncy. The palm rest is made of carbon fiber, so users do not get tired when typing for long periods on this laptop.

The trackpad on the XPS 9700 is quite large, which makes three-finger and four-finger swipes easier on this laptop. Gestures such as dragging and dropping are also easier and smoother thanks to the trackpad's large size.
