Unity has just announced a new tech demo titled Time Ghost, introducing the Unity 6 Engine.
This Unity 6 Engine demo features impressive visuals and graphics. The demo lasts over four minutes and was created by the same development team behind previous tech demos such as The Blacksmith, Book of the Dead, and The Heretic. This demo highlights their advancements in enhancing visual quality and project complexity through the application of machine learning.

Visual advancements have made the graphics in Time Ghost stunning, with the demo leveraging improvements from HDRP (High Definition Render Pipeline), many new lighting options with APVs, Scenario Blending, Smoke Lighting, along with a strong focus on performance through GPU Resident Drawer. Users of this engine will utilize tools like VFX Graph and Shader Graph to customize graphics to their liking.
In close-up shots of clothing, viewers can see every fiber, allowing for the identification of the material type. The clothing deforms realistically, even in fast-moving scenes, such as when characters are running.
Although the Unity 6 Engine graphics have become significantly more realistic, the characters look somewhat mechanical while running, possibly due to hand positioning. They appear to be running with arms outstretched for balance, which makes them look a bit awkward.
One of the highlights Unity 6 focuses on is using Machine Learning to create accurate and realistic cloth deformation. To achieve this, they used Unity Sentis, where they trained an ML model with 2,000 peak animation frames. The accurate deformation occurs in 0.8 ms per frame, allowing the project to maintain high visual fidelity.
Unity 6 Engine features many new capabilities introduced in the Time Ghost tech demo, including an improved hair system. In close-up scenes, one can see hair simulated in real-time with high density. This feature was originally used in Enemies, and the hair generation system has been significantly upgraded, allowing for seamless LOD rendering, automatic LOD generation, and volumetric wind to create a realistic hair system that reacts correctly to physics depending on the situation.
Unity has posted a detailed blog post about the new engine and what users can expect when using it. There are many new features, including an improved VFX collision system that allows for more stable and robust collisions.
Unity 6 Engine will be released on October 17.
