OVERVIEW: Affordable Copilot+ laptops equipped with the 8-core Snapdragon X Plus processor are expected to debut at the IFA 2024 exhibition in Berlin later this month. However, early leaked benchmark results suggest this new SoC may fall short of expectations, particularly for gamers.
Benchmark scores show underwhelming performance in both CPU and GPU tests. In the Cinebench 2024 test, the new chip achieved 102 points in single-core mode, 5% lower than the 107 points achieved by the 10-core Snapdragon X Plus processor. In multi-core testing, the new processor recorded only 649 points, 20% lower than the 809 points of the more powerful version.
Scores in Blender and Geekbench both failed to meet requirements. The Snapdragon X Plus processor took 2:33.48s to complete the standard rendering test in Blender. In Geekbench 6, it achieved only 2,422 points in the single-core test and 11,386 points in the multi-core benchmark.
In 3DMark Time Spy, the Adreno X1-45 GPU achieved a total of 1,025 points, with only 916 graphics points, significantly lower than the 1,900 points achieved by the Snapdragon X Elite. In 3DMark Steel Nomad, this GPU recorded 1,159 points with only 8.6 FPS, which is approximately 40% lower than the X Elite.
The report also indicated real-world gaming standards for Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and the results were also unfavorable. While the game was released six years ago, the GPU only averaged 18 FPS at 1080p resolution with low settings and only 12 FPS at high settings at 1080p—much lower than the 33 FPS achieved by the X Elite.
According to information from CPU-Z, the tested chip features eight Oryon CPU cores divided into two clusters, running at speeds of 3.24 GHz and 3.42 GHz. This CPU is built on a 4nm process, with a total cache capacity of 30MB, including 12MB of L2 cache per cluster. The GPU is the Adreno X1-45 chip with a frequency of 280 MHz, providing 1.7 TFLOPS of AI computing capability. However, the NPU still provides 45 TFLOPS, meeting Microsoft‘s minimum requirements for Copilot+ PCs.
The Snapdragon X Plus chipset, model number “X1P-42-100,” was developed specifically for mainstream Copilot+ PCs. The benchmark evaluations were performed on an ASUS ProArt PZ13 laptop, model number “HT5306QA_HT5306QA.” This laptop is equipped with LPDDR5X-8448 memory and runs on Windows 11 version 26100.
