Apple has officially unveiled the iPhone 16e, a new budget-friendly iPhone model that features significant upgrades in design and performance. Notably, this product also marks a shift in Apple‘s naming strategy. The iPhone 16e features a flat-edge design style, similar to the iPhone 12 and later models, while being equipped with modern hardware. Powerful iPhone 16e configuration with some trade-offs
The iPhone 16e features a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with a 2,532 x 1,170 pixel resolution, a 460 PPI pixel density, and HDR support. It utilizes the Apple A18 chip, which includes a 6-core CPU (2 high-performance cores, 4 efficiency cores), a 4-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine. Compared to the standard iPhone 16, this chip has only one minor difference: the iPhone 16e’s GPU has 4 cores, while the standard iPhone 16 version has a 5-core GPU.
Apple offers the iPhone 16e with 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage options. The device measures 146.7 x 71.5 x 7.8 mm, slightly smaller than the standard iPhone 16 (147.6 x 71.6 x 7.8 mm), and is 3 grams lighter. This difference may mean that cases from the two versions are not interchangeable.
First appearance of the Apple C1 modem chip
A highlight of the iPhone 16e is the introduction of the Apple C1, the first mobile modem chip developed in-house by Apple. According to Apple, this is the most energy-efficient modem ever integrated into an iPhone, promising more stable network connectivity and improved battery life.
Regarding the camera, the iPhone 16e features a 48MP sensor with an f/1.6 aperture and a 26mm lens, supporting Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). The front camera is 12MP with an f/1.9 aperture, featuring autofocus and Face ID support to assist with device unlocking, payment authentication, app logins, and many other tasks.
The iPhone 16e also has an IP68 water and dust resistance rating and comes with a customizable Action Button that can be set to functions such as opening the camera, turning on the flashlight, activating shortcuts, or switching to silent mode.
In terms of battery life, Apple states that the iPhone 16e can play local video for up to 26 hours and stream video for 21 hours. The device supports wireless charging, USB-C connectivity, and includes satellite services such as Emergency SOS, Find My via satellite, and Emergency Roadside Assistance.
Significantly higher price than the iPhone SE
Pre-orders for the iPhone 16e will begin on February 21st, before officially going on sale on February 28th. The starting price is 599 USD, significantly higher than the 429 USD price tag of the iPhone SE 3 when it launched in 2022. Despite the many upgrades in performance and features, the $170 price difference still leaves users questioning whether this is a truly attractive option.
Along with the launch of the iPhone 16e, Apple has also discontinued several budget iPhone models, including the iPhone 14 (from $599), iPhone 14 Plus (from $699), and iPhone SE 3. This makes the iPhone 16e the lowest-priced iPhone in the current product lineup, with the standard iPhone 16 starting from 799 USD.
