Apple has just introduced new MacBook Pro laptop models equipped with M4 Pro and M4 Max chips. Initial reports show that these new SoCs are not only superior to previous versions but also faster than high-end Intel and AMD CPUs.

Last month, Apple launched a series of new Mac models using M4 chips (M4 Pro and M4 Max), including upgraded iMacs, redesigned Mac Minis, and all-new MacBook Pro models supporting Thunderbolt 5. While the M4 Pro features a 14-core CPU and 20-core GPU, the M4 Max is equipped with a 16-core CPU and 40-core GPU.

Previously, the company released the 7th generation iPad Pro with the standard M4 chip, featuring a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU.

In Geekbench 6 testing, M4 Pro achieved 3,925 points in the single-core benchmark, significantly higher than the 3,450 points of the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K and 3,359 points of the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X. This is even more impressive considering the M4 Pro operates at 4.5GHz, while Intel and AMD chips can boost up to 5.7GHz.

In multi-core testing, the M4 Pro scored 22,669 points, slightly lower than the 23,024 points of the 285K. However, this score is still significantly higher than the 20,183 points of the 9950X. It is worth noting that the M4 Pro has only 14 cores, while the Core Ultra 9 285K possesses 24 cores. The Ryzen 9 9950X has 16 cores and 32 threads.

While the M4 Pro scores are impressive, the M4 Max is even faster. This chip achieved 4,060 points in single-core testing and up to 26,675 points in multi-core testing, both of which far exceed the scores of the 285K and 9950X.

Although the initial scores for the M4 Pro and M4 Max are very impressive, it should be noted that Geekbench 6 is only a synthetic benchmarking software and does not necessarily reflect the actual real-world performance capabilities of the processors. We will likely have to monitor the performance of the two M4 models in applications like Cinebench or Handbrake to evaluate their actual performance.
