Some ASUS ROG gaming laptop models have begun receiving new BIOS updates to fix stuttering, freezing, and audio cracking issues. This is a firmware-related issue rather than a hardware defect, and ASUS has officially provided a solution by releasing BIOS Beta versions for the affected models.
Causes of stuttering and lagging on ASUS ROG laptops
Recently, many ASUS ROG laptop users have reported experiencing stuttering, freezing, and even distorted or cracking audio. According to analysis from a GitHub researcher named “Zephkek,” the cause does not stem from hardware but originates from the firmware. ASUS has also acknowledged this issue and stated that they are conducting an investigation.
Results show that the error lies in how the BIOS interacts with Windows ACPI.sys, which is responsible for decoding commands from the hardware. Because the firmware contains unoptimized code, the system experiences sudden latency spikes every 30–60 seconds. This leads to performance issues, as the BIOS continuously calls high-priority interrupts and toggles the GPU on/off at inappropriate times.
BIOS Beta for Strix SCAR 15 and Zephyrus M16
To resolve this, ASUS has announced BIOS Beta versions specifically for two laptop models: ROG Strix SCAR 15 (2023 – G533ZW) and ROG Zephyrus M16 (2023 – GU604VI). The update will be released next week, and ASUS recommends that users download it for testing. Importantly, installing this BIOS Beta will not affect your warranty.
ASUS also stated that, in addition to the two models mentioned above, many other ROG laptops will continue to receive official BIOS patches in early October. Therefore, users can rest assured that the stuttering and lagging issues will soon be thoroughly resolved.
ASUS’s next steps
The swift action from ASUS shows that the company is seriously listening to feedback from the gaming community. Releasing the BIOS Beta first and then expanding to more models indicates that they want to both test the fix and ensure stability before rolling out the official patch.
