The Dell Precision mobile workstation line is about to gain new members in the Precision 7000 family, with powerful specs, a modular design, and two special features: CAMM and DGFF.
Early leaks about the Dell Precision 7000 Series point to two models, the Precision 7770 and Precision 7760, in the high-end mobile workstation segment. The new machines get a big boost in processing power, going from an 8-core Intel Comet Lake CPU to a 16-core Intel Alder Lake-HX. These processors share a socket with the desktop versions and have 8 Performance cores and 8 Efficiency cores, using HyperThreading to deliver 24 threads. Users will be able to choose from Intel Core i5, Core i7, and Core i9 CPUs with a 55 W TDP.
For graphics, the Dell Precision 7000 Series will offer GPUs from both NVIDIA and Intel, with a range of options, topping out at the RTX A5000 16 GB, plus Intel Arc parts with a TDP of around 90 - 125 W, so they will most likely be ACM-G10 GPUs. The DDR5-4800 memory comes in capacities up to 128 GB non-ECC or 64 GB ECC, while maximum storage consists of 4 M.2 2280 slots supporting PCIe Gen 4x4. The Precision 7000 also supports Thunderbolt 4 and comes with a 4K OLED display with HDR500, a 16:10 aspect ratio, 500 nits of brightness, and thin bezels.
Inside the Dell Precision 7000 is a vapor chamber cooling system with 2 fans. The highlights of the Precision 7000 are two new features: CAMM (Compression Attached Memory Module) and DGFF (Dell Graphics Form Factor). CAMM (shown in the lead image) is a DDDR5-4800 memory module designed exclusively by Dell. Essentially, one CAMM module can replace two SO-DIMM slots, so it takes up less space. That said, CAMM will limit RAM upgradability, forcing users to buy modules supplied by Dell. DGFF, meanwhile, is another new form factor developed by Dell, this one for GPUs. There is no information on DGFF yet, but I suspect that by creating a new form factor, Dell may also be making it possible to swap the GPU in the Dell Precision 7000 Series.
For now we still don't know when the new Dell Precision will launch, but it could be in Q3/2022, since Intel is also expected to introduce Intel Arc GPUs for workstations around that time.
