Framework has just released a new graphics module for the Laptop 16 featuring the GeForce RTX 5070 12GB GPU, and the price point is making many users pause: $1,199 for the module alone, which is $500 higher than the 8GB version currently selling at $699. A 72% price difference is hard to ignore, especially since most other specifications remain virtually unchanged. For those who choose Framework because of its modular upgrade philosophy rather than replacing the entire machine, the question now is whether an extra 4GB of VRAM is worth that premium. This is also a clear example of how graphics memory pricing directly impacts the upgrade costs of modular gaming laptops.
Framework Laptop 16 adds a new option, but upgrade costs are skyrocketing
According to Framework’s official announcement, the new variant is available for pre-order and will begin shipping in June 2026. Current Laptop 16 owners do not need to replace their entire machine, as the company also sells the graphics module separately for direct replacement. This is a major difference compared to most modern gaming laptops, where the GPU is almost always locked from the day of purchase.

The issue is that the Framework RTX 5070 12GB is priced significantly higher than the 8GB version, despite having the same 100W max TGP, 4,608 CUDA cores, 384 GB/s bandwidth, and the same Blackwell feature set like DLSS 4 and 9th Gen NVENC. In other words, the largest gap lies in the VRAM capacity increasing from 8GB to 12GB, rather than a comprehensive leap in architecture.
From a buyer’s perspective, this is the kind of upgrade that causes hesitation. If you have been following the Framework Laptop 13 Pro, you can see that the company is sticking closely to its promise of repairability and upgradability. Therefore, the 12GB version primarily addresses the memory limitations in new AAA games, high-resolution textures, lightweight local AI models, and certain rendering workloads that easily hit VRAM limits. The benefit is real, but it leans more toward future-proofing for the next 2-3 years rather than providing an immediate performance jump in every game.

However, if your primary needs are casual gaming, moderate rendering, and you don’t frequently hit the 8GB limit, the $699 version is much more reasonable.
The most notable aspect of this story isn’t whether 12GB is better than 8GB—the answer is almost certainly yes. The point to consider is how high the cost of adding 4GB of VRAM on a modular laptop has become.
