Will the Alder Lake-P CPU lineup mark the return of the Intel chip king?

While laptops using Intel’s 12th Gen Alder Lake chips are expected to launch in Q1 2022, benchmark scores for chips like the Core i9-12900HK and Core i7-12800H have already surfaced. Recently, reporters from Notebookcheck.net gained early access to Cinebench R20 and R23 scores for the Core i7-12700H CPU, which likely belongs to an upcoming MSI laptop.

Although the screenshots only show the benchmark scores for the Core i7-12700H CPU, based on the BIOS version, Notebookcheck.net reporters realized this could be the MSI GE76 Raider that MSI is expected to introduce soon.

As a high-end gaming laptop, it is not surprising that this device would likely be equipped by the company with Intel’s high-performance Alder Lake-P CPU series, such as the Core i7-12700H.

According to Intel’s specifications, the Core i7-12700H is an H45 class processor in the Alder Lake-P series, featuring 6 Golden Cove (P) cores and 8 Gracemont cores – totaling 14 cores and 20 threads. With the TDP of Alder Lake-P ranging from 12W to 45W, this processor series is essentially a hybrid of the U-series and H-series.

Typically, Intel has always outperformed AMD in single-core performance, while AMD has held the throne in multi-core performance. However, starting from Intel’s 11th Gen, this boundary has gradually blurred with Intel’s Tiger Lake-H and AMD’s Zen 3 Cezanne series. Now, with Alder Lake-P, Intel is pulling significantly ahead of its competitor.

Looking at the single-core scores on Cinebench R20, the Core i7-12700H achieved 689 points, approximately 12% faster than the Core i9-11950H and 21% faster than the Ryzen 9 5900H, AMD’s flagship chip series.

Meanwhile, the Cinebench R20 multi-core score shows the Core i7-12700H reaching 7158, which is up to 47% faster than AMD’s Ryzen 9 5900H. This figure is also consistent with other scores on Geekbench, which show the Core i9-12900HK is 61.3% faster than AMD’s Ryzen 9 5980HX.

It gets even more interesting when comparing Intel’s processor with Apple‘s M1 SoC, which is famous for its extreme performance and energy efficiency. While there are no single-core performance scores available, the Cinebench R23 multi-core score shows the Core i7-12700H achieving a massive 18,501 points, not only 47% faster than the Ryzen 9 5900HX but also up to 49% faster than the M1 Max.

Regardless, there is no official information regarding the performance of these processors yet, so we may have to wait for more data to get a detailed view of the power of Intel’s new chips.

Even so, these leaked specifications show a major leap forward for Intel in processor performance, after many years of trailing both in performance and technology behind competitors like AMD and, more recently, Apple. However, this position might only be temporary, as early 2022 will see the launch of AMD’s Ryzen 6000 Rembrandt series with a new architecture, which is expected to bring even more significant performance advancements.
