Firefox continues to provide security updates on old operating systems
Mozilla has officially announced that it will extend support for an additional 6 months for Firefox ESR 115 – the long-term support version – on operating systems including Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and macOS 10.12 Sierra, 10.13 High Sierra, 10.14 Mojave. This information confirms that Firefox will continue to receive security maintenance and bug fixes until at least March 2026.
This move responds to the demands of the Firefox loyal user community, especially individuals or organizations that cannot yet upgrade their hardware or software due to budget constraints or application compatibility. Mozilla stated they will re-evaluate in February 2026 to decide whether to continue providing further support, depending on the user situation and technical resources at that time.
Firefox remains committed to Windows 7 users
While other browsers such as Chrome, Edge, Opera, or Vivaldi have completely dropped support for Windows 7, Firefox continues to maintain compatibility for users on old operating systems. Mozilla admits that maintaining this support consumes significant financial and technical resources, but still believes it is worthwhile as Firefox still maintains a certain number of users on Windows 7.
However, the extension only applies to critical bug fixes and security patches. In the context of Microsoft ending support for Windows 10 in October 2025, Firefox users on this platform should also prepare to transition to Windows 11 or newer macOS versions if they wish to continue receiving full updates.
