GPD is preparing to unveil its next-generation handheld gaming console – the GPD Win 5, featuring powerful performance that far exceeds devices of similar size, even approaching the power of gaming laptops equipped with an RTX 4060. However, to achieve this performance, the device sacrifices an integrated battery and relies entirely on an external battery pack.
Compact design, unexpectedly powerful configuration
Detailed information about the GPD Win 5 has appeared on the manufacturer’s online store. The device measures only 20 x 26 x 5.5 cm, yet possesses hardware comparable to high-end laptops, making it the most powerful handheld device GPD has ever developed.
At the heart of the GPD Win 5 is the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 processor – an APU commonly found in high-end laptops such as the Asus ROG Flow Z13, OneXPlayer Super X, or Framework Desktop. Compared to the previous generation, the Win 4 which used the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, the Win 5 features comprehensive upgrades: the CPU increases from 12 to 16 Zen 5 cores, the GPU jumps from 16 to 40 RDNA 3.5 graphics cores, and the TDP also increases significantly from 15–30W to 45–120W.
The device supports LPDDR5X RAM options up to 128GB – a configuration level typically only seen on dedicated desktops, far exceeding most current gaming laptops.
Real-world performance outperforms RTX 4060 laptops
According to reviews from ITHome and influencer MuBuS, the Radeon 8060S GPU performance on the Win 5 surpasses an RTX 4060 laptop in Fire Strike tests and is equal in Time Spy. Specifically:
- Apex Legends: 192 fps
- Assassin’s Creed: Shadows: 93 fps
- Cyberpunk 2077: 70 fps
- Indiana Jones and the Great Circle: 70 fps
- Alan Wake 2: 61 fps
- Forza Horizon 5: reaches 98 fps and can go up to 140 fps in some cases
The GPD Win 5 can smoothly run many new AAA games at high graphics settings and 1080p resolution without needing to lower the configuration.
External battery and flexible power solutions
Due to the extremely high power consumption, the GPD Win 5 has completely removed the integrated battery. Instead, users will use an 80Wh external battery attached to the back or connected via a cable. A major plus is that the device supports “hot-swap” – allowing for quick battery replacement without turning off the machine. With just one button press, the device will enter hibernation mode to preserve progress before the battery is swapped.
Additionally, the GPD Win 5 supports Biwin’s new mini SSD standard – only slightly larger than a microSD card but with read speeds up to 3.7GB/s, helping to accelerate game loading and system startup.
Currently, the official price has not been announced, but some influencers testing the product stated that the price could be under 1,500 USD (~36 million VND). The GPD Win 5 will officially go on sale starting October 17.
