Reports have indicated that AMD is developing an expanded version of the Strix Point APU lineup – the upcoming AMD Ryzen AI Max. While previous details were limited, a recent leaked performance test has confirmed earlier reports that Asus will launch a 2-in-1 gaming laptop utilizing a high-end APU.
A new entry from Geekbench has revealed that the 2025 Asus ROG Flow Z13 will be equipped with the AMD Ryzen AI Max APU, also known as Strix Halo. AMD is expected to announce this new flagship laptop processor along with other products at CES in January.
The new Asus device features the most powerful configuration from AMD’s upcoming Ryzen Max lineup: the Max+ 395 with integrated Radeon 8060S GPU. Running at a clock speed of 3GHz, this 16-core, 32-thread APU achieved a single-core score of 2,894 and a multi-core score of 20,708, compared to previous Z13 models using high-end Alder Lake and Raptor Lake CPUs.
At the same time, the new device’s OpenCL GPU score of 76,961 is quite comparable to laptops equipped with mobile-specific RTX 4050 and 4060 GPUs. A Vulkan test from an early sample also achieved similarly impressive results.
Ryzen AI Max is the high-end version of AMD’s Ryzen AI 300 series, expected to power the next generation of laptops and handheld gaming consoles. While the Ryzen AI 9 370, expected to be the foundation for the Z2 Extreme handheld gaming processor, features 12 RDNA 3.5 compute units, the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 bumps that number up to 40.
The new ROG Flow Z13 was initially revealed in a design leak back in August, when a source stated that the CPU would consume up to 30W and the iGPU would consume up to 80W, necessitating improvements to the cooling system. AMD is also expected to announce lower-tier Ryzen AI Max chips, such as the Max 385 and Max 380, at CES.
Additionally, RDNA 4 is likely to make its official debut at the trade show, competing with Nvidia’s upcoming RTX 5000 series and Intel’s new Arc Battlemage. RDNA 4 aims to significantly enhance ray tracing performance compared to RDNA 3 and marks the first time AMD is deploying AI-based upscaling technology.
Meanwhile, reports and leaks suggest that Intel is developing a response to Strix Halo, codenamed Arrow Lake Halo. These high-end mobile APUs will target the premium workstation laptop market.
