Lisuan Technology, a Shenzhen-based startup, has officially activated its first domestically developed 6nm graphics card. Although full technical specifications have not yet been released, the company claims this chip aims for performance comparable to the Nvidia RTX 4060—an ambitious goal for a first-generation product from a new developer.
The Breakthrough Technology Behind GPU G100
Lisuan Technology claims the GPU G100 is manufactured using a 6 nanometer process, although they have not disclosed the actual manufacturer. Due to US export restrictions, it is almost certain that this is not Samsung or TSMC. It is highly likely that the chip is produced at China’s SMIC factory, which has manufactured 6nm chips for Huawei, specifically for their AI Ascend 920 processors.
The highlight of the GPU G100 is its entirely self-developed TrueGPU architecture, which does not rely on licensed IP from companies like Imagination. This is a completely new design, developed by a team of former Silicon Valley GPU experts. According to official WeChat information, the G100 supports modern graphics APIs including DirectX 12, Vulkan 1.3, and OpenGL 4.6, indicating it is aimed at both gaming and general-purpose GPU tasks.
While official specs are not yet available, rumors suggest the GPU G100 could deliver performance on par with the GeForce RTX 4060. This is a massive ambition, considering the RTX 4060—though not the highest-end model—remains a powerful representative of Nvidia’s previous generation. The G100 is expected to feature sufficient video memory, moderate power consumption, and support for all essential APIs.
A Challenging Journey and Future Prospects
The development of the GPU G100 began in 2021. Lisuan originally intended to bring the chip to market in 2023, but financial difficulties brought the company to the brink of bankruptcy. It was only through an emergency $27.7 million investment from its parent company, Dongxin Semiconductor, that Lisuan was able to continue operations.
In early 2024, the factory began producing the first GPU G100 chips and successfully passed the startup phase. Currently, Lisuan is focusing on hardware and software testing, as well as driver optimization. The next phase will be critical, as real-world performance will depend on driver optimization and compatibility with major operating systems and popular game engines.
Although it is a mid-range card from the previous generation, the RTX 4060 remains an impressive card, manufactured on TSMC‘s 5 nm process. The smaller the process, the higher the transistor density, leading to better performance and efficiency. The G100’s aim to match the performance of the RTX 4060 is an ambitious goal, especially since Nvidia, AMD, and Intel have decades of experience and massive investments in R&D.
