Laptops equipped with the RTX 5080 GPU are proving that you don’t need to spend tens of millions of extra VND to achieve performance nearly on par with the RTX 5090. Recent benchmarks show that the RTX 5080 laptop version is only 10% to 15% slower than the RTX 5090 in most tasks, while being significantly cheaper—by up to $1,000.
In a test conducted by Notebookcheck, two XMG Neo 16 A25 laptop models sharing the AMD Ryzen 9 9955HX CPU were compared: one using the RTX 5080 and the other equipped with the RTX 5090. This provided the ideal conditions to measure the actual performance gap between NVIDIA’s two highest-end laptop GPU series currently available.
Comparable performance at 1080p, significant difference at 4K
Benchmark results show that at 1080p resolution, the difference is almost negligible. Both cards deliver similar FPS in Final Fantasy XV, while the gap is only 5% or less in most other titles. This indicates that at Full HD resolution, the CPU is the performance bottleneck rather than the GPU.
However, when switching to 1440p and 4K, the RTX 5090 begins to show its advantage. In the Port Royal test (1440p), the 5090 outperformed the 5080 by about 15%, while in Steel Nomad (4K), the gap reached 18%. Heavy titles like Cyberpunk 2077 or Baldur’s Gate 3 also showed the RTX 5090 leading by approximately 12-15%.
Despite this, both GPUs struggle with heavy AAA titles at maximum settings. In Monster Hunter Wilds at 4K with Ray Tracing, the RTX 5090 failed to reach 50 FPS, while the 5080 dropped to 40 FPS. With Alan Wake 2, both even fell below 20 FPS when all effects were enabled. The RTX 5090 still maintains a 13-15% lead at many resolutions, including 1080p in Assassin’s Creed Shadows—a rare occurrence.
Value per frame: RTX 5080 wins overwhelmingly
One of the highlights of the laptop RTX 5080 is its cost efficiency. With a price tag up to $1,000 cheaper than laptops equipped with the RTX 5090, the RTX 5080 delivers very close performance. When considering the cost-per-frame ratio, the RTX 5080 is clearly the more sensible choice for most gamers.
According to experts, the laptop RTX 5090 is only truly suitable if you are upgrading from the RTX 30 series or earlier, or if you require maximum performance for intensive tasks like AI or 3D rendering. Meanwhile, the RTX 5080 is ideal for AAA gamers, streamers, or high-end graphic designers who do not want to overinvest.
Additionally, NVIDIA is set to release laptop models equipped with the RTX 5070 and 5070 Ti, targeting the mid-range segment. At the same time, desktop versions of the RTX 5060 and 5060 Ti are also on the way, promising a new range of options for users across all budget levels.
In short: If you are debating between buying an RTX 5080 laptop or spending more for an RTX 5090, carefully consider your actual usage needs. With performance only about 10-15% lower but a significantly lower price, the RTX 5080 is currently the most reasonable and best value choice in NVIDIA‘s high-end laptop GPU lineup.
