According to the latest reports, the Taiwanese semiconductor giant has begun ramping up mass production lines while investing heavily in three new facilities to accelerate manufacturing capabilities and meet massive market demand. A notable rumor has recently surfaced suggesting that, due to the specific production cycle of this new technology, all three major names might unveil their flagship chips within the same month, creating unprecedented competition.

Extended 2nm chip production cycle shifts launch schedule

Traditionally, Apple has always been a “VIP” customer of TSMC and often holds an advantage in accessing new technologies earliest. Previous sources claimed that “the Apple” had already secured more than half of TSMC’s initial 2nm production capacity. However, the latest rumors paint a different picture, suggesting that MediaTek and Qualcomm will also unveil their Systems on a Chip (SoC) alongside their competitor at the same time. Explaining this coincidence, sources reveal that the 2nm node production process is significantly longer than TSMC’s current 3nm process. This forces manufacturers to finalize chipset designs earlier than expected to stay on schedule.

Based on information from Smart Chip Insider, this coming September will be an explosive time for the tech industry as a series of hardware masterpieces are revealed. This list includes Apple’s A20 and A20 Pro chips, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Gen 6 Pro versions, along with MediaTek’s Dimensity 9600. Previously, there were speculations that Qualcomm and MediaTek would switch to using TSMC’s improved “N2P” process variant instead of the standard “N2” variant to gain an advantage over Apple. However, the latest reports have refuted this, asserting that all three companies will use the same manufacturing process and launch simultaneously in September.

For those who haven’t caught up, the A20 and A20 Pro chip series are expected to be the heart of the iPhone 18 generation and the long-rumored iPhone Fold, which is anticipated to launch next year. Meanwhile, Qualcomm is not staying behind, as they are rumored to introduce not just one, but two versions of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, distinguished by the “Pro” suffix, promising superior processing performance for high-end Android devices.

A new balance in the semiconductor technology race

On MediaTek’s side, the company is expected to announce only a single Dimensity 9600 version. It seems this manufacturer has not yet decided whether to pursue a dual-chipset launch strategy like Apple and Qualcomm. However, a bright spot for this Taiwanese fabless semiconductor designer is that they are off to a more favorable start than their competitors. Earlier this year, MediaTek proudly announced that they had successfully achieved “tape-out” (completing the design for production) for their first 2nm chipset, with an official release planned for 2026. Because the completion of each SoC will occur earlier due to the 2nm production cycle being longer than the 3nm process, all manufacturers are racing against time.

With this scenario, all three companies have the opportunity to showcase their respective technologies slightly earlier than in previous years. This means that high-end smartphone models using Qualcomm and MediaTek chips will launch at almost the same time. Apple may be slightly more rigid with its iPhone 18 family schedule, with products likely becoming available for pre-order about a week after the launch event.

According to this rumor, if all SoCs are announced in September, no single manufacturer will have a “head start” advantage. In that case, the playing field will be more level than ever, and the deciding factor will be optimization. The company that performs better in balancing powerful processing performance with energy efficiency (battery life) will be the winner in the eyes of consumers.
