Google has officially launched a new feature called “Preferred Sources”, allowing users to prioritize search results from their favorite websites in the Top Stories section and related search queries. This feature was previously tested in Search Labs since June and has now begun official deployment in the US and India.
Google proactively selects the news sources you trust
With Preferred Sources, users can opt for reliable websites or blogs that they want to see more frequently in search results. To set this up, simply click the star icon next to the Top Stories section when performing a search, then manually enter the domains of your preferred information sources. Google will save and apply these settings to most subsequent queries, helping you easily access content from familiar sources.
In particular, for certain specific searches, Google will display a separate section called “From your sources”, which aggregates results from the exact sites you have bookmarked. This not only personalizes the search experience but also saves you time when looking up familiar topics. There is no limit on the number of sources; users can add as many sites as they like to optimize their experience.
If you previously signed up to test this feature in Google Labs, your previous selections will be preserved when transitioning to the official version.
Advantages and community concerns
According to Google’s internal testing data, over 50% of users who enabled the Preferred Sources trial selected at least four trusted sources. After two months of testing, Google decided to expand this feature to English-speaking users in the US and India. However, the timing for a global rollout has not yet been officially announced, although many sources suggest it won’t be long.
Google asserts that Preferred Sources is a user-centric feature aimed at enhancing access to reliable information. However, many experts have expressed concerns that being exposed only to familiar news sources could increase the “echo chamber” effect—making users less exposed to opposing viewpoints and increasingly confined within their own personal perspectives.
