The TPM 2.0 requirement for installing Windows 11 has been a roadblock for many users who want to upgrade their operating system. However, you can create a Windows 11 installation USB drive that doesn't have to meet this standard, which makes the installation process much more convenient.
The Trusted Platform Module (TPM) was developed by the Trusted Computing Group (TCG) and has been recognized as a standard by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
This chip sits on the computer's motherboard and operates independently of the CPU. It provides hardware-level security through built-in cryptographic keys, and it connects to the computer's other components through hardware.
TPM is built into laptops and desktops and is used for device identification, information authentication, and password protection through hash functions. Instead of storing passwords on the hard drive as before, passwords are stored directly on this chip, including fingerprint and face data.
TPM 2.0 is essentially an evolution of earlier TPM versions. Version 1.2 was released in 2011, and the latest version, 2.0, has upgraded the encryption technology, delivering faster and more efficient responses.
Security is always a priority for users, so Microsoft wants to make sure its systems are highly secure and can fend off attacks from cybercriminals, which is a key reason TPM 2.0 was introduced. It is the minimum requirement users must meet to install Windows 11.
However, not every computer meets the standards needed to install Windows 11. This article walks you through installing Windows 11 on machines that don't have TPM 2.0. The process takes two steps.
Step 1: Download the Windows 11 ISO image file:
- Go to the link below to download Windows 11.
https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11
- On Microsoft's Download Windows 11 page, find the section Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO) for x64 devices, select your Windows 11 version > Download now, then choose your language > Confirm.
- Select 64-bit Download to start downloading the ISO file.
- When the download finishes, you'll have a file named Win11_xxxx_English_x64v2.iso. Next, move on to step 2.
* Step 2: Create a bootable USB with the Windows 11 installer:
- First, you need a USB drive with at least 8GB of capacity and the latest version of Rufus. You can use the link below to download it.
- We recommend downloading the portable version of Rufus so you can skip the installation process entirely.
- Plug the USB drive into your computer, wait for the Rufus file to finish downloading, then open it. You'll see the default interface shown below:
- Under device(1), select your USB drive. Here I'm using a 32GB USB drive. Click the Select(2) button in the Boot selection section, browse your computer for the ISO file you just downloaded, and select it. Next, click the Partition scheme option. Choose MBR if you want to use this USB drive on a system with BIOS or UEFI. Leave Target system and Partition scheme as they are if you plan to use this bootable USB drive on a UEFI system. Click the Start(3) button to begin.
- A Windows User Experience box will open. Here, you can apply any customizations you want to the Windows 11 installation USB. I'll check Remove requirement for 4GB+ RAM, Secure Boot, and TPM 2.0, Remove requirement for an online Microsoft account, and Disable data collection (Skip privacy questions). Click OK.
- Rufus will display a warning that all data on the USB drive will be erased. Select OK to begin.
- You can follow the progress of the USB creation under Status.
- When the READY message appears, you've finished creating your Windows 11 installation USB. Select CLOSE to exit the program, then remove the USB drive and use it on the machine you want to install Windows on.
