Running into AutoFill problems in Excel? Here are a few ways to quickly fix automatic data-filling errors in Microsoft Excel.

AutoFill is one of the easiest and most popular Excel features, but it can still act up now and then. Don't worry, though. You can sort out the problem easily with the methods below.

Turn on the Fill Handle in Excel

Sometimes Excel's AutoFill feature stops working without any warning. When that happens, the first thing to check is whether the AutoFill option is enabled.

Open the File menu and go to Options.
Select Advanced from the left-hand menu and scroll down to the Editint Options section.
Check Enable fill handle and cell drag-and-drop. You should also check Alert before overwriting cells to avoid accidentally changing important information.

Give Excel more data

Sometimes AutoFill doesn't work as expected because you haven't given it enough data to detect the pattern. Try selecting more cells before using AutoFill, or type in more data yourself before dragging the AutoFill handle.

Remove unnecessary filters

AutoFill can stop working if it conflicts with another Excel tool. For example, if you've added a filter to sort your Excel data, AutoFill may not be able to detect the pattern it should follow.

Columns or rows with a filter applied usually show a Filter icon in the top cell. To clear a filter, follow the steps below:

Select the row or column that contains the filter.
Open the Data tab.
From the Filter menu, click Clear.

Stop pressing Ctrl or Cmd

AutoFill behaves differently depending on whether you press & hold Ctrl or Cmd while using it. If you hold the key while filling cells, AutoFill repeats the data instead of extending a series of numbers, text, or dates.

Now, if you aren't deliberately pressing Ctrl or Cmd but it still behaves that way, the key may be stuck. In that case, you can try a few options:

Clean your keyboard to remove dust that may be interfering with the key.
Disconnect the keyboard if you're using a USB or Bluetooth keyboard.
Remap the key to disable the function of the Ctrl or Cmd key.

Turn on automatic calculation

Another setting that can keep AutoFill from working is the calculation option. In Excel, open the Formulas tab > Calculation Options menu. Here, select Automatic.
