What is XMind?
XMind is software that helps you sketch out ideas, analyze problems and work out solutions using mind maps, with no need for pen and paper. XMind is compatible with most of today's desktop operating systems, including Windows, macOS and Linux.
It is free to install on your computer, and because it is open source, you can share your mind maps with others, who can view them, comment on them and download your diagrams to study or use as a reference.

How to download and install XMind on your computer
Step 1: Go to the XMind download page.
Step 2: Choose the version for the operating system you use and download the installer to your computer.
Step 3: Next, open the installer you just downloaded, and the software will begin installing on your computer.
Then click Continue.
Click Agree to accept the XMind terms of use.
Step 4: At this point, you will need to sign in to an account if you want to share your mind maps with other people. If you don't have an account yet, click Create an account below. If you would rather not create one, you can click Skip to skip this step.
After clicking Create an account, you will be taken to the XMind sign-up page. Enter your email and password > then click Sign in to create your account.
Step 5: Once your account is set up, go back to the XMind app and sign in. Here is what XMind looks like once you are signed in.
How to create a mind map with XMind
Step 1: On the app's main screen, you will see the available diagram structures: Mind Map, Org Chart, Tree Chart, Timeline, Matrix (spreadsheet) and Fishbone. Pick the type of diagram you want to use and click the Create button below.
Step 2: In the top corner of the diagram editor, you will find a toolbar with the following features:
- Topic: Add a new topic.
- Subtopic: Add a subtopic.
- Relationship: Show the relationship between topics.
- Summary: Add a summary point for the selected topic.
- Boundary: Add a boundary around the selected topic.
- Insert: Insert notes, boxes, links, attachments, images and audio.
Step 3: In addition, by clicking the Panel icon in the top-right corner, you can change how the selected topic is displayed, such as the box shape, color, border, font formatting, structure type and more.
